As a duo, Duo Meranti has performed extensively throughout Los Angeles and the Bay Area. The duo is currently working on their first album of commissioned new music for them. Individually, Sean and Chrysanthe are both performer-composers with ample experience in both contexts.
Sean is a current DMA candidate who recently spent a year traveling, performing, and studying Central Javanese gamelan at ISI Surakarta on a scholarship from the Indonesian government. His first album Nowhere Found is comprised of chamber and solo works for standard, prepared, and fretless nylon string guitars, and he is currently working on a second album featuring more original compositions. Sean holds an MFA from CalArts, a B.M. Summa Cum Laude from UC Santa Cruz, and has studied guitar, gamelan, composition, orchestration, and electronics with legends like Miroslav Tadic, Wolfgang von Schweinitz, Michael Pisaro, Ulrich Krieger, Djoko Walujo, Nyoman Wenten, Mesut Özgen, Larry Polansky, and David Evan Jones.
Chrysanthe is an MFA Performer-Composer candidate who also holds an MFA in Creative Writing. Much of her composition work features spoken word poetry, or literary influences, interwoven with music. Her first album Stories consists of chamber music for piano, strings, and light electronics. Chrysanthe is also working on a second album of musical poetry, Homecoming, started at a composer residency in her native country Greece and to be finished in another native country Cambodia this year. As a violinist, she has been on world tours with Paul Anka and Ariana Grande, and performed on TV shows like Glee, the American Music Awards, America’s Next Top Model and for artists like Alicia Keys, Bastille, Jennifer Hudson, Common, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, and more.
Both Sean and Chrysanthe love carving out dedicated time from their solo endeavors to come together, rehearse, and perform as Duo Meranti, an incredibly special project for them both.
